PR Those Two Cryptic Letters

By, Jaclyn Coleman, Public Relations Director at Muse Group

“I’m in PR”

“What is PR? Is that some kind of banking system? Pure Results? Parks and Recreational stuff?”

I can’t tell you how many times I get this question. I can see the puzzled looks on their faces, and it’s actually quite entertaining to hear what people come up with. “P…… R…….. PUBLIC RACECARS!” I’m sure other industry professionals are nodding their heads and laughing in agreement right now. At times I wish more of the world knew what public relations is. If I said I was a lawyer, or doctor, or teacher I know I would never get these bewildered looks.

Well guys and gals, I’m here to help set the record straight and give business owners a little insight to what PR is and why its so important for your business.

PR stands for public relations. There are many different aspects to public relations, which is why I think the job description gets a little blurred. I am going to keep it simple and give you the definition I feel most relates to the profession.

Ever watch the show Sex in the City? I often get compared to Samantha Jones and her scripted PR career. As much as I love Samantha’s character, unfortunately, my life is not all fur coats, martinis and celebrity parties. Don’t get me wrong, at times it can be! But at that point I’m usually celebrating a job well done. It’s the work before the party that Sex in the City refuses to show, the ugly truth.

Public relations requires endless amounts research, developing creative story angles and pitches, maintaining relationships with the media, live shots and numerous client preps.

At Muse Group we research till there is no more research to be done. We do this because we want to make sure we find the perfect media outlet and person to cover the story.

Then creatively come up with ways to pitch you to the media. Basically we want to WOW the media and get them excited to cover the story. Its like leaving bread crumbs for the media to find their way to our client. Except the breadcrumbs are shiny themed invitations.

Once Muse Group reels in different outlets to cover the story, we prep. Preparation is the key to well groomed media coverage. We prep the media for the client and, vise-versa, prep the client for the media. Essentially, we want everyone involved to be prepared with the information they need in order to run a successful story.

In summary, PR is about communicating the clients’ business in a personable way that current and future customers can relate to. The more authentic and conversational you are, the more likely you are to be successful. We are simultaneously bragging about our client’s business and their product/services through public outlets, as well as making it easy for the customer to obtain the product/service our client is selling.

Having the right PR is an essential part of any successful business. If you want your business to be seen, Muse Group is the answer.

Let us be your muse.
